Memory games are a simple and enjoyable way to challenge your brain. Although they may look like casual games, they require several mental skills at the same time. When you turn over a card, your brain has to notice what is on it, remember its position and compare it with cards you have already seen.
Regularly practising this type of task can help exercise your short-term and working memory. Working memory is the ability to temporarily hold information in your mind while using it to solve a problem. It is useful in many everyday situations, from remembering instructions to keeping track of information while reading, studying or working.
Memory games also encourage concentration and attention. The better you focus on each card and its position, the easier it becomes to find the matching pair later. Playing faster is not always the best strategy. Taking a moment to actively notice each card can often result in fewer moves and a better score.
Most importantly, treat the game as a challenge rather than a test. Memory performance can vary from day to day, and the goal is simply to keep your brain active, improve your strategy and see if you can beat your previous score.
